Wren has really come out of her shell in the past few months. I credit most of that change to the play group I take her to weekly. It's once a week, kids her age (some younger and some just a bit older), toys, occasional crafts, and snacks.
I've noticed how much she has changed while we were there today and she was playing with some of the kids that are about 4 years old. And actually playing with them, not just sitting in the Fisher Price car by herself, wheeling around the room and observing everyone. She was right in there. But she used to be so shy and cautious. Now she will look at a kid and yell "Go away!" or "Dats mine!!". Kinda swung a little far in the opposite direction of shy, but we can work on that.
When we are in Superstore and she sees kids she yells..."HEY KIDS!!!" and looks at me and says "Dose my fwends."
While we are at the park, she runs up to kids her age and asks "Wanna play wif me?". Sometimes she gets flat out rejected, but sometimes she makes a friend. She is excited, no, totally pumped to be with other kids.
She sees kids in the park across the street from our house and yells, "HEY GUYS!!" in a way that sounds like they've been friends forever. And she will keep yelling it until they notice.
When she says goodbye to Mason, the boy that lived next door, she would go right up to him and give him a big hug and a smooch on the cheek without hesitation.
Who is this kid that used to be such a cautious baby?
Okay, she still is cautious. Like family events when she is surrounded by adults. Honestly, she turns into an instant crank and goes on autopilot with the word "No."
Don't pick me up. Don't look at me the wrong way. Don't do anything or else I will freak.
But she loves kids.

Sweetie Girls
Wind, cooler air, sun...it's definitely fall out there and I'm so excited. I've been slowly pulling out sweaters, pants and boots that I had tucked away...not too many shirts though- they were all maternity wear since I was pregnant with Ellie over the whole last winter. I look forward to packing away my shorts!
Ellie's been working on her tummy time. She kind of yells at me to pick her up after a minute or two but hey. Someone..cough*my sister*cough...mentioned that Ellie has a head shape similar to the lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins. I thought that was super funny...and kind of true!
So, even though two kidlets are a lot of work, I have to say that having a toddler to occupy the baby is actually really helpful. When Ellie gets fussy or bored, Wren thinks it's her job is happy to come over and help entertain Ellie. And sometimes I can even leave them both in the crib to play while I fold laundry or pick up the house a bit.
Um..is this not the most darling picture of them yet...?!
The other day was pretty hot out so Ellie chose a cute summer dress. I had to post a picture of her wearing it because she was given 4 of these as gifts when she was born!! I mean, it really suits her of course, and I would have exchanged them for bigger sizes next summer but they don't come that big...
Ellie has started to giggle, and I actually don't know if she has rolled over completely on her own yet but she's pretty close. We left her with a sitter (my sister) for the first time last week while we went to the wedding (see previous post) and she did so well that we asked Andrea to come back again when we go to another one next week!
I may have written out a "tips" list for Andrea a mile long. Ha.
We're working up to being able to go out on an actual date sans kids. We have gone on a ton of dates with Ellie there, wolfing down brunches, dinners and the occasional lunch but that's getting a little old now. I kind of want to taste the food...
...Not to mention my list of places to go try is getting longer and longer. We have a groupon to Bothy Wine & Whisky Bar, and I really want to have dinner and drinks at Mercer Tavern. This Edmonton blog also gives a few new suggestions for some other great places to eat in the city.
P.S. A review of the Ergo carrier I've been wearing religiously this summer coming soon..
Congratulations to Chelsie and Eric...
Last Friday we celebrated with our friends at the Faculty Club- Chelsie and Eric got hitched!
We had such a great time with friends, food, and dancing.
Here's a snapshot of us- it was about time we had a new one taken...

I Just Want to Say: Costco
(Title of post is adapted from a chapter title in Nora Ephron's book, I Remember Nothing. The book is hilarious and I highly recommend you read it, by the way.)
I had the unfortunate luck of having to get some groceries at Costco recently. Recently, as in today. Today being a Saturday. Hence, the unfortunate part.
My theory about Costco is that you either are 98% in love with the place, or you mostly hate it. I'm in the second category. Here's why...
The carts. The Costco carts are huge. Yes, I get that they should be because you are going to walk in and buy enormous quantities of stuff you mostly don't need. Admit it, some of it you weren't planning to buy at all but you walked down the aisles and went, "Oh! Look at that! A flat of canned tomatoes! What a deal!" and you threw the flat of canned tomatoes into the cart happy as a clam.
You can't get around anyone quickly in these monster carts. They don't turn on a dime . The aisles are barely wide enough to fit two carts side by side. And God help you if you are in the area between the refrigerated cheeses and frozen food sections where they have set up sample after sample of processed foods where everyone is noshing down goodies.
You can't get around the large people with your carts either. Especially when they stop to admire the deal, then debate if the item is something they really need while standing 2 feet away from their cart, blocking you from zooming past.
And some people use the carts simply to transport their children that are perfectly capable of walking because they are 8 and 10 years old. The kids have made a nest in the cart and think it's hilarious to curl up on the bottom and play games like "How to be really annoying to their parents in Costco".
The carts blow.
Sidenote: (Look! A picture of baby Wren that is so similar to Ellie!)
The vast majority of people that shop at Costco are not individuals, but groups or pairs. Pairs of couples in relationships. Moms and daughters. Parents and their kids. Parents and their kid's kids. It's like the card forces you to come with someone else. It's as if the savings require two people to push two carts for all the stuff. Or new parents to push one stroller and one cart each. This leads to major congestion.
And the people don't come with lists. I never ever see people shopping with a Costco grocery list. They know of the few things they want, but then spend the rest of their time
"Hey, they have the whole box set of The Hunger Games here. We should get that. That's a great deal."
"We already have the first book. We don't need to buy the whole set now, just buy the rest of them some other time."
"But it's cheaper to buy the whole set together, we need to get this. I really want to read them now."
"We didn't come here for that today. Let's get it another time."
"But then it will be gone!" And so the argument goes..
Or my personal favourite. People stand in the way, ogling at items on the shelves, sort of in a dazed trance and forget that there are other people around them trying to get the h-e-double hockey sticks outta there as fast as possible. Move! I know what I want even if you don't! Yes, this is a race, have you seen the check out lines?!?!?
My happy place is the far back corner next to the flats of pop. It's so.quiet.there.
But it all begins at the parking lot. Oh that horrific parking lot. We have actually come to 100 meters of Costco, see the packed parking lot in the distance, and screeched around the corner, feeling like we nearly dodged death right there. Some days aren't worth the fight.
Like I said earlier, Costco can tear families apart. That place doesn't always bring out the best in people. Take today for example. I overheard two parents with their toddler in an aisle...
Mom- "You seem to think it's always sooOOOoo easy, so here, you take her!" as she passes cranky child to the father. "Let's just get our stuff and GO."
The bill at the checkout. You spend and hour of your afternoon trying to nab all the "sweet" savings at Costco, only to wait another hour in the checkout despite your best efforts to go at a "slower" time such a Monday afternoon. There is no such thing as a slow time at Costco, you are delusional.
So you wait with your cranky child and your baby that needs to be breastfed this instant and is upset at the soother you are trying to shove in her mouth until it's finally your turn to unload the groceries on the belt.
As you load your groceries and God knows what else that isn't a food item like you promised yourself, you begin to sweat. You look at the things you put down and realize they are all jumbo sized. You realize that the flat of 88 nectarines you are about to buy will all ripen at the exact same second on your counter and that you and your family won't be able to eat them fast enough because you also have a jumbo size container of grapes, blueberries and a watermelon the size of a basketball to bring home as well. You panic because you know you don't need this much stuff and yet the deals were not to be passed up. You begin running through a list of people in your head that you hope could use some extra fruit this week so that you don't feel bad that you have to throw out half of it when your family failed at consuming it all.
Then there are your non-food related purchases like that pair of yoga pant capris that you thought would be a good idea and a sweater that your mom probably already has so now you and your mom can accidentally match the next time you go out shopping together to a real clothing store. You wonder if you can subtly pull some things off the belt without the teller noticing, but they are so fast and efficient and already asking you if you want to upgrade to the Executive Membership card that you are distracted and now they're asking you how you'd like to pay your bill of $489.53.
Then you faint.
But, if you're like me, you have a list and know what you want. You zoom around trying to grab it all, timing yourself to break an old record to get back to the car as fast as possible. But then you stop...do we need toilet paper? Argh, can't remember. Wait, are we all out of dish soap? Probably. Pick it up. Pick it up NOW so you don't have to come back to this nightmare!! you tell yourself.
You get home, and your husband (if he's at home with the kids because he couldn't bear the thought of stepping in that place today), helps you unload the car. You know with each bag he carries inside he is wondering how much the total was today. He sees the yoga pants hanging out of the top of the bag and you can actually feel the sigh coming.
You put away everything only to find that you had 3/4's of a bag left of toilet paper, a full container of dish soap and a million nectarines now sitting on the counter about to be devoured by fruit flies in exactly 3 days.
Then you "forget" where the bill went and hope you don't get asked for it until several weeks later when no one will care anymore. You vow to do better next time. But you know you won't.
Here are the most common lines that run through my head when I am in Costco, maybe you can identify:
"Are you serious??"
"Honestly, WTF."
"This isn't worth it!"
"I could be at Superstore perusing the Joe clothing and makeup instead."
Everyone has their own worst nightmare circumstance. I have two: getting stuck in an off-leash dog park, or Costco.
*This post was entirely written in my head as I shopped in Costco today. It begged to be shared. This is the edited version.*

Abstract Art
Yesterday at the library, Wren and I picked out Art by Patrick McDonnell among a million others (Some of our favourite authors are Todd Parr, Mo Willems and Ellen Stoll Walsh!)
But this post isn't about books...
The heat was too much for me to handle yesterday afternoon, and since we have a lovely AC unit that blasts cold air into the kitchen/living room, I thought it might be fun to try out some painting in that spot in the house. We decided to do some abstract art.
A long time ago, Wren was given some Melissa & Doug paintbrushes. They're awesome because they have wide handles that younger kids can hang onto easily.
Now, I'm not one to "edit" my child's art so it's not ugly or something, but I did tailor the process because..
I didn't want to open every single jar of 12. We opened 3. That's just called mess management. She loved painting for the whole 15 minutes it lasted until she was over it. You can see mine on the bottom right. She made me paint with her. I was trying to do the mom thing where you give your kid an activity and go get something else "important" done. She wouldn't have it.
I made one, Wren made 4. This one was my favourite so we put her first painting up on the fridge. Nice.
You may not know this about me, but I actually love painting. Not saying I'm good at it, I just love it. And I don't do it often, especially now since paint and two tiny kids is asking for trouble.
A few Christmases ago, Kenton actually bought me canvases, paint, brushes, and whatever that thing is called that you mix your paint on. I did a few, one is in Ellie's room now. But I don't paint actual pictures or anything, I'm a big BIG fan of abstract art (See the painting in the background? My friend Marcie painted it and I've had it as the focal point in our living room since!. And conveniently, my favourite abstract artist, Michelle Armas, was just featured in an interview on Design*Sponge!
Seriously, ah-mazing. She also sells $35 prints! I know what will be at the top of my Christmas list this year...
Anyway. The point of all this is that I also bought a canvas for each girl's room. We're going to get Wren to do a painting for her and Ellie and I'm going to be real honest here- I hope I like them, even a little bit. I don't really want to put something mega ugly up and say "I love it because my kid did it!"...because that would be a lie.
I'll do a follow up post once this happens, it's going to be fun!

If you go to the market...
...you can get a set of these!
Don't ask me how we've missed the balloon ladies all summer, every Saturday morning at the down town market. But as long as it's running, we will be going to find these ladies as we pick up our weekly produce!
They will make anything for you, and just for tips. Pretty sweet.
Wren's other favourite is the silver lady. She moves like a robot, but can hold very still like a statue. She wasn't there this week but hopefully the next!

Say What??
Well, my mind has just been blown. I was perusing another blog and came across The Invisible Bicycle Helmet. Honestly, it's unbelievable what these two women invented. Watch the short video clip on it!
I'm looking forward to my weekend plans, they involve going to the market and going to another close friend's stagette. And it's going to be ah-mazing! Have a good one!

Happy 4 Months to Ellie Girl
I'm 2 days late on this but I'm sure you don't care as long as I post something, and preferably sooner than later, and please include pictures...
So I did. Everyone's asked me if Ellie is bigger, chubbier, and heavier than Wren was at this age. My memory is shot, so I had to go back and check Wren's weight and heigh records. And the answer is...
No! Ellie weighs less than Wren did at 4 months, but is pretty much exactly the same length at 25 inches.
Ellie is currently at 15 lbs 10 oz. (Wren was 16 lbs 15 oz).
But Ellie is so chubby that it's hard to imagine Wren was just as rolly polly, but she was.
And today Ellie let out big giggles for the first time!
She's a huge fan of "dig-a-digs" and "ahh-goos" and "num nums".
So there you have it, Ellie is keeping up to Wren quite nicely although she has her own distinct look.
Happy 4 Months to Ellie Girl!

Four Little Friends
Wren and Isla have been pals pretty much since birth. During our play date this morning with the girls, Jill remembered this "old" picture of them...
Her memory was triggered because the second set of girls were playing on the blanket again today. Ellie and Annie...
We tried to get the big kids in for a photo, but it's tough to get 4 kids to cooperate..they were all too interested in looking at one another.
I couldn't stop staring at Annie's eyes..and those eyelashes!!
We just love these little friends :)

The Same or Totally Different?
I dug through a few old photos of Wren when she was Ellie's age to see how similar or different they are. Ellie is just as chunky as Wren was, but putting the photos side by side makes me see how different their faces look! (At least I think so, what do you think?)
