Ellie's Bubba and other updates

Not surprisingly, we haven't left our house for the past 2 days. I realize not everyone has this luxury, as I have no job to clock in at and can stay home every single day if I want.
But the girls both have colds and why would I drag us out of our warm house with movies and blankets just for the sake of going out.

In other news, Ellie loves her bottle, the Bubba. That's just what it's called.
She is such a big girl (literally) that she can even feed it to herself. Today she was on the rug while Wren had her snack at the table. Wren makes Ellie laugh more than anyone else and I caught a few pictures of her giggling behind her bottle...

I can honestly say that I don't miss breastfeeding at all. I am so happy that I was able to breastfeed Ellie for 9 months and so happy to let it go. I think she is pretty pleased with feeding herself too...

Wren's preschool experience is also going very well- okay that's a bit of an understatement. She LOVES it. She knows most of the kid's names and comes home happy and satisfied from her morning out. I've already signed her up for next September (she will still be too young for kindergarten by then).

How big does Ellie look with those teeth? She is growing up lots.

The construction on the new house next door has started. For anyone who doesn't know, last summer the house next to us was bulldozed in preparation for a new one to be built. The plans were delayed (they should have started the spring Ellie was born) but they just started now. I'm not excited about this but I'm thankful they didn't start when Ellie was a newborn because my house is already shaking with the loud booms next door.
I'm excited for the warmer weather and the chance to get out of the house on the noisier days!

Playing house

Wren was given these "Mighty Big Blocks", and yes, they are mighty big I have to say. At least it feels that way in our small main floor. With the cold weather last week we had to make some fun happen so out came the blocks.

Wren and I made a house, a restaurant, and now it's a drive-thru.

Ellie is typically the customer by default...

"Hay thar, welcome to McDonald's, what can I git fer ya??" (The game is better when a "twang" is used).

Funny.

Child of the 90's

I saw this video from the blog, SwissMiss and loved it. I am a child of the 90's and I remember every single thing in this ad!

Bath time with babies and bubbles

Warm baths are a cozy way to end the day. I poured a third of the bubble bath in tonight to make it extra fun.
Baths blow Ellie's mind, it's pretty cute...

Normally I would consider the next two photos to be ones to delete instantly and not post, but the fact that each girl was caught with fluttering eyes was too funny not to share...

Sweet Ellie in the suds...

Okay, a lot of suds!

Bright colours in all the white

This post is intended to bring a smile to your face today with few words...

This is Wren's restaurant. Or Olivia's, should I say...she is very adamant about being called Olivia lately.
Um and Ellie in the background...hilarious...

I think the weather is getting to her too. What. A. Frown.

Winter, you're killing me!

I'm sorry to say it. I hate this weather. I feel blah. I feel lazy even though I jump on the stationary exercise bike downstairs just to get "moving". We try to get outside but the coats, snowpants, mittens and God knows what else we have to throw on takes more time than the actual amount we spend outside and I can't drag myself to do it some days...like today. I want to take the girls out just to get out but the actual process from the backdoor to the car feels impossible.

Maybe it's because winter started in October this year. I would actually rather be at work doing something than stuck in the house one more day looking out the window at white snow everywhere thinking about how squirrley Wren will be by 3:30pm.

Yeah, sorry, I'm being a bummer today. I'm hoping that the cutsey pictures will brighten the page instead.
Since all I can think about is making food on cold days (and then eating it all), I have to share the best snack recipe ever. Ever. Peanut Butter Bites from Sprouted Kitchen. I whipped them up in the food processor last night, and the only part that took time was rolling them into cookie balls. Be warned, when you first chop up those almonds in there, the sound will be deafening. I'm not kidding, I thought Ellie was going to jump right out of her high chair and never forgive me with those crocodile tears. However, she recovered and amazing snacks resulted. I've eaten the majority of them so far. Go, quick, make a yummy snack to feel better about the weather!!

And because the peanut butter bites have practically vanished since last night, I'm making Smitten Kitchen's Maple Granola. Unfortunately you will have to go buy the actual cookbook to get that recipe but it will be worth it. I got it for Christmas and have made a ton of her recipes with great joy already. Her gnocchi in tomato broth was incredible..and...I made gnocchi! She must be amazing to have such a recipe that ordinary home cooks like myself can make.

Okay, if you are like me and needing a helpful pick me up such as a good laugh, watch (or re-watch if you already saw it last week) the opening monologue from Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the Golden Globes. Three words: hunger games joke. Watch it now. (Am I getting bossy? I'm getting bossy).
Maybe part of my less than enthused mood is due to the fact that Glee doesn't return until the 24th...why must they make us wait so long, it's my favourite nap time show to watch when the girls give me my lunch break!

Alright, Alright, enough moping about how Edmonton looks like a snow globe. I still have no idea what I'm doing this afternoon and whether or not I will indeed pry my butt off the couch and into my ice cube car for  better adventures...OMG it's ONLY 1pm!!! Longest.day.ever.

I'm not going to worry about it.

Worrying is something I do on occasion, like Wren's first day of preschool (by the way you all seemed to really like that post, it had one of the highest page views!) or leaving Ellie with a sitter hoping she will just sleep for them, things like that.
I am not a constant worrier. I worry if I start to get lost trying to find a new place and I'm verging on being late.
I worry when I bite off way more than I can chew like when I offered to watch a neighbour's child part time while she worked and then realized I couldn't handle it and had to break the news while feeling terrible about it.

I think I worry about normal stuff for the most part.

This week, nay, these last few months, I've been thinking about worries, anxieties, pressure, struggles, and how to approach them. It seems like there's a lot of it in our lives at times. I recently had a conversation with a group of friends about the pressures and stress of being a mom, wife, woman and balancing everything. Being a mom especially brings enormous pressure from ourselves and the people around us all with their own thoughts on how rearing children should be done. There's a lot of opinions, books, internet forums, and just a lot of information in general that we are bombarded with.

Speaking of books, I'm currently reading Bringing Up Bebe by Pamela Druckerman. The shortest way I can tell you about it is that it's about an American mother and her husband raising their small daughter in Paris and the differences they observe between French and American parenting. I'm finding it really interesting and taking some notes on the nuggets of wisdom I'm reading! It's also fun to learn a bit about the French culture and why they do some things that are rooted in their history, even if you don't agree with everything the author is saying about her comparisons on the child rearing side of it.

One of the stark differences between parenting philosophies in the book, is that Americans (I'm sure we could also include Canadians in there) are fretting far more about their children's development, well being and skills than the French parents are. I'm not going to get into much of it at all, but the author is pointing out a lot of truths through these observations she has made. I see a lot of fretting parents, I'm around other parents constantly. We fret. And to be honest, I'm tired of fretting much at all, even though I'm sure I don't worry half as much as some parents do about ensuring my children are stimulated enough by enrolling them in a million activities for example.

We fret about our kids using fluoride toothpaste versus non-fluoride, learning colours, how much they eat at lunch time so they don't starve, being "bored", getting rejected in the playground, breastfeeding or formula feeding, and the list goes on. We are worried about a lot of stuff that doesn't really matter in the end. The amount of advice out there doesn't help the worrying though.

I guess if I have a New Year's resolution this year, it will be not to fret. Not to worry about Ellie not rolling over yet even though she's 9 months old and probably could be if she cared. I'm not going to worry that Wren can't say her "R's" and they sound more like "W's". I'm not going to feel guilty that I'm not playing with Wren enough during the day, because there is nothing wrong with her playing on her own too. I'm going to really try to not let the billions of opinions out there change how I want to parent, even when someone feels I'm doing something wrong. I have seen bad parents out there, and I see many many good parents out there. I don't worry about my friends and how they parent because they all do such an amazing job.
There is also a lot out there I can't control, and when there really is something to worry about, then I will, but not the things that I know don't matter.

What I will try to do is allow more time for myself (and not just sitting down reading a book during nap time at home), but going out with my friends. Taking an entire day to myself to do something fun...an entire day. Sometimes I feel like I do a TON, and sometimes I feel like I don't do enough.
I forget all of the behind the scenes things that I do that add up to the ton of work I'm doing. (You know tiny things add up quick like clipping little nails, registering for preschool, scheduling a haircut, making a playdate, taking books back to the library for and getting more, sorting the clothes that are too small and organizing them into the basement boxes, sewing new velcro tabs onto cloth diapers, making a meal plan for the week, and the list goes on). I'm not saying I'm the only one doing things and Kenton does nothing. But I need to remember that balance means that I need to let myself do fun things too, and I'm not being selfish.
There is always something to be done, but the likelihood of the house falling apart if it doesn't happen right this second, is slim. There is nothing wrong with leaving your kids with your husband for the day. There is something very right about taking your good book to a cafe and reading it there instead, when you can.

I have new-found freedom since I have decided to put Ellie completely on bottles. Breastfeeding is done, and she doesn't fight having a bottle of formula and actually let's others put her to sleep instead of just me. It's the best, and now that feeling of guilt I used to have when I left the house and husband to a screaming baby (because she was SO attached to me and breastfeeding)  is gone and I am more at ease with making time for myself.
The fact that I can tell you I'm reading a book should be enough to say I have a bit more time for me these days in that sense.
I want to be the best I can for everyone in my house, and for myself. I want the girls to see me as a positive, happy person that they can aspire to be like as they grow up and know that I am taking care of them but also taking care of me.

9 Months

Happy 9 months to our sweet Ellie!

Pink Snuggle Puppies.

At Christmas the girls were given the Snuggle Puppy: A Love Song book that comes with a cd with the  actual recorded song. For whatever reason, both girls love to sing the song and be called Snuggle Puppies. It's funny which terms of endearment that kids actually like!

Wren is in a bit of a phase of wanting to only be called "Wren". If you call her something like "sweetie" you get this response: "My name not Sweetie, it's Wren!" Nothing wrong with that :)

Keep warm this weekend!

On Weaning.

Ellie has 4 razor sharp teeth. Two on the bottom and two on top.
Ellie likes to bite.
Do you see where I'm going with this?

Ellie is almost 9 months old (What!) and I'm ready to stop breastfeeding. The whole biting thing is pretty much what cinched that decision. Yes, yes I've heard many methods to help this (push their face into your boob, flick their cheek, sit them on the floor for a minute) but honestly? I'm ready to be done. Instead of me trying to figure out when I'd like to stop, one bite and I said "Oh, yeah maybe NOW."
Too bad you can't just stop cold turkey, because many bites later I was ready to be done for good.
I'm not going to get into it all, but two reasons you should wean slowly (as in more than a week), is because your boobs will be fairly uncomfortable and because there is potential for your hormones to go crazy and sink into a bit of a depression....in a very unscientific nutshell.

Anyway, aside from pure biting, I'm ready to stop pumping milk for the evenings I leave her with someone else. I'm ready for someone else to put her down for a nap without a huge fuss or at nighttime which was always the hardest 9 times out of 10 for the babysitter.
I'm very ready to burn my Hooter Hider (for the record, the name of your business blows. just saying), which is a nursing cover that always flowed in the wind or got pulled off by a struggling baby underneath to flash the public.
AND, I'm reeeally looking forward to the time (which is nearing) for Ellie to have an overnight with her grandparents. None of us can really remember how many months old Wren was when she had her first sleepover. I want to say 8 months but now that seems so little!

I haven't been feeding her the daytime for the last few days, just before bed, in the night (about once) and right in the morning. Each time I am terrified she's going to get me! I keep my free hand near her mouth just in case I need to pluck her off quick. I'm not kidding people, it's the worst feeling. Ever.

SO. Now that it's bottles all day long, I asked Wren if she wanted to help feed Ellie. Well, of course!

See Ellie's hand ready to give Wren a big squeeze on the cheek? Ellie is a pincher as well. Please also notice the hold she has on the nipple of her bottle with those teeth. Yikes.

Ellie just thought this was the best thing ever. Wren is hired!

Okay is this not the sweetest thing you have ever seen....Such a cute little moment with the two of them. Sigh.

I'm aiming to have Ellie completely on bottles by the end of the week. We have about a million Medela bottles so this won't be a problem!

1st Day of Preschool

Wren had her first day of preschool this morning, and it went...
Great!!
So great that she was very mad to have to leave. That's not surprising.

In the morning she picked out her own outfit (honestly, I had nothing to do with her super cute choices), had me read her "welcome" letter 15 times, and talked about how much fun she was going to have.

She let me take a couple of pictures when she got home.
(Not really the best time to do so- she was a tired, grumpy,  hungry kid, but hey.)

Wren made a friend, and her teacher informed me that together, the girls made "sand cakes". Aw.
Within 2 minutes of entering the preschool room, she found a baby doll and toy stroller and began wheeling the baby around the room checking everything out. She was at home.

She shows off a rice krispie cake with a happy face and her name on it.
Preschool is 2.5 hrs for 2 mornings a week with a group of about 10 other 3 yr olds.

I think we are going to love this new part of our week!

Update: A few people have asked over the past while about Wren's potty training. I guess I never did catch you all up on that. Um, well, she's fully trained! Even at nap time. She can go all by herself and will run to the bathroom when needed. So, yay! All the hard work was worth it, as it usually is :)

Gone Sledding. Be Back Later.

A few days ago, we roped Aunty Andrea into coming over and going sledding, ha!
She came prepared with snow pants- something I still don't own for some reason. It's not until you get outside and play with your kids that you realize your boots could also be higher when the snow is pouring in.

We sort of forced this smile out of Ellie. She's fairly solemn about being outside, unsure of why we she has to be with us out in the cold when she'd rather be inside gnawing on a Baby Mum-Mum.

Sledding with a 3 year old means you spend 1.5 hours getting your kids ready (have snack, go pee, get socks on, sweater, hat, coat, snow pants, gloves, boots, etc) only to have them be unwilling to trudge back up the hill for 5 runs. As Kenton would put it "It's a lot of work for little return." haha! He uses this saying in other situations often. Kind of sums up it up at times though!

That's why you need Auntys around to give 'em a shove into the snow and play!
We pushed Wren in the saucer down the hill and when she got to the bottom she flopped over and said "I'm bwoken!"

Wren refuses to show that she was having fun, but we all know the truth.

This isn't exactly the most "supportive" sled for Ellie. She just kept sliding out because she is mostly just a big snowsuit blob baby right now.

Here we have Wren making a snow angel. I'm going to be very honest despite how much fun we look like we're having, I'm getting excited at the thought of Spring/Summer 2013. I won't be sad if it comes early this year :)

Melissa & Doug Make-A-Face

Wren was given a Melissa & Doug Make-A-Face pad for her birthday this year. It's been hilarious watching her put together faces on the templates with eyeballs, eyebrows, mouths and jewellery. Here are a few of the faces she has made...

This is Alessandra (named after her neighbour friend)

Apparently this one is Alessandra-Baby. (All names are given by Wren).

This is Theresa. Not sure where that name came from.

We made a "Wren". Pretty good!

This is me. I'm so...plain. What is she trying to say? haha!

I'm not making this up... but this one is "Daddy", as in Kenton. I give her credit for picking the only template with short, blonde hair!

And this one is Ellie :) I can honestly say I did not help her with any of these!

This sticker game has kept her busy for a solid 30 min at a time, therefore, it's an amazing activity for a 3 year old. They even have ones with monster, alien and crazy faces, or scenes with animals or dress up dolls.

Back to our routine, and I like it.

Happy New Year!
I for one, am happy to be back to the normal routine again. I currently have both the girls down for naps, I'm surveying the disaster called my house and choosing to blog and paint my nails at the same time.

I see all of these things around my house that I want to organize. I take things downstairs into designated boxes, but after 40 trips going up and down, I wonder how Martha Stewart can maintain so much order. She probably hires people to organize her house for her.

On that note of organization, I'm slowly trying to take down Christmas decorations. We predict that if we do it all at once, Wren will view the disappearing act of Christmas as a travesty of all travesties to be had. Wren sort of sees the world through utterly ecstatic rose coloured glasses or in dark storm clouds of devastated circumstances.  Anything in between is few and far between. Like every year, the house looks sort of bare once it's been stripped down of decorations. Wren declared that we should now decorate for Halloween instead!

On this quiet day at home, I finally pulled out the camera again for a couple of shots and a few small updates.

Ellie is truly a sweet chubby munchkin. She is nearing the 9 month mark, and is not a fan of food, ever. She chokes down peach, apple and pear purees each day at my request. Ellie doesn't move. In fact, I think she is reverting back to her earlier infancy because she falls over a lot when she is only sitting, and just lays there. Ah well, I'm still in no rush for her mobility to come. When that arrives, that is Phase 2 of baby life that is another challenge in itself. Constantly ensuring all small objects are picked up, the house is baby-proofed again, and Wren not leaving her crap around for Ellie to get at. (Note: Wren has an obsession with "tiny things" to hold. Not a good mix).

Wren is still 3. She starts preschool next week and I have found her a backpack that I can also live with. American Apparel has super cute but simple ones with fun colours. Win, win.
She is full of questions "Who is dat? Why? Where he going? What he doing? What his name again?" that seem never ending.
At bedtime, we read stories, give kisses, leave the room, and then Wren sneaks around doing things she isn't supposed to. Last night she pulled all of  her underwear and socks out of the drawer and dumped them behind her headboard. She drags all of her stuffies and as many books as possible into her bed. She finds clothes, clips and extra pajamas and brings them all in. She looks out her window into the alley and looks at the houses with lights on. She tries laying in various weird positions. She also tries to "hide" things in her covers only to be overcome with the need to tell us what she hid and wreck her secret.
She says things that make us laugh. Kenton came out into the living room wearing a new shirt and she enthusiastically said "Cool shirt!!".
When I helped get a sticker off of her page, she said, "You're a vewy good hewper Mom!".
She also says things that melt your heart, like when she goes up to cuddle Ellie and says, "I love you Ellie. I love you da best."

Wren likes to point out that Ellie's eyes are blue like Daddy's, and that her eyes are brown like Mommy's. This is true.
She is also obsessed with knowing who bought her things, like her dress, her games, her books, everything. "Who bought dis for me?" she will ask....400 times a day. Oh, 3 year olds!

With all of the Christmas presents this year, she spent most of her day imagining games with this yarn in the picture below. Ellie liked all of the boxes and tissue paper. Typical :)
